Papillon Dogs are toy-size dogs also known as the Continental Toy Spaniel. They come from France but became popular first in Spain and Italy. You can see them in many classical paintings.
How did Papillon Dogs get their name?
Marie Antoinette is well known for owning a Papillon dog named Coco. Marie Antoinette even said that of all the pets she owned: she loved her Papillon dog, Coco, the most. Marie Antoinette gave Papillon dogs their name because Papillon means butterfly in French. Marie noticed Coco’s ears looked like a butterfly, hence Papillon.

Until the late 1800s, you would only find Phaléne Papillons. Phaléne Papillons are the same as Papillons today, but the only difference is that their ears droop to the sides.
What’s a Throwback Papillon?
Throwback Papillons are any Papillon above the usual size and weight of most Papillons. Likely because of ancient genetics from when Papillons were more Spaniel-like than today.
